The JVP today stated that the government together with the ministry of defence should take full responsibility with regard to the tense situation prevailing in most parts of the country. Speaking to Daily Mirror online JVP MP Vijitha Herath said " The "Grease yaka" is all over the place.

Over a period of a month there were reports from all over the country ranging from Mahiyangana, Kandy, Kanthale, Hatton and now the East. The police has still not been able to stop this menace which is directly affecting the peace and stability of the people living in those areas".

Speaking on the killing and the resulting curfew in Potuvil, Herath stated that "people have no trust in the police. The main reason the people are protesting is because they aren't sure as to what the police would do to the person who was apprehended.

There were rumours about the police letting the accused go scot free once the villagers apprehend these people". He lashed out at the  behaviour of the police stating " The police has no right to open fire on civilians. If you look at what happened in Katunayake to this day no one has been held accountable for the death of Roshen Chanaka. The IGP and most senior members of the Police force are being used as political tools."

The JVP MP went on to add that " The situation in the east can escalate to racial violence. There is no law and order in the country and this is a dangerous situation the country is falling into. The ministry of defence has to take direct responsibiltiy of first not been able to calm the situation and secondly for having no control over the police" he said. (Fazal Mohomed)
