Police to monitor allocated seat capacity of vehicles

The police are to strictly monitor vehicles and take action against them, if they are engaged in transporting more than the given seat capacity of passengers.

They warned trishaws not to transport passengers above its given seating capacity. Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that these steps were taken following the accident in Mount Lavinia.

“We don’t have a problem if the vehicle is transporting children who are under the age of 12. But in the vehicle registration license it is been mentioned about the seating capacity and the number of persons the vehicle can transport,” he said.

“These laws are there in the Police Ordinance but the police had not been very strict with these laws especially because of school children who are under this age category,” he said.

Meanwhile the police suggested a number of implantations that will enable them to strictly regulate school vans.

He said that there is a necessity to set standards on the road worthiness of vehicles transporting school children as well as school van drivers. (Supun Dias)
