Magazine prison under control

The tense situation that arose today with 1700 prisoners rioting within the Magazine remand prison was brought under control by around 5.30pm.

A batch consisting of 125 LTTE suspects who were placed in special ward in the Mgazine prison were transferred to the Welikada prison due to the riots. The Police said a special probe is underway regarding the incident.

The Prisons department have already begun its own investigation into the allegations made by the prisoners against a superintendent and also the damage of property which was caused due to the ensuing mayhem. (Supun Dias and Hafeel Farisz)
