Death toll rises to 19

The death toll from the turbulent weather conditions rose to 19 this afternoon with 43 people still reported missing and 53,773 people from 13,337 families being affected, the Disaster Management Centre  (DMC) said today.

According to latest figures put out by the DMC 630 houses have been fully destroyed and 5,094 houses partially damaged.

Nine districts have been affected by the turbulent weather conditions with the Matara District suffering most with 15 deaths and some 40 fishermen gone missing. Some 426 houses have been fully destroyed and 2,141 houses partially damaged in Matara.

Seven sluice gates in Eruwewa, three in the Nachchaduwa tank and one in Kala Wewa were opened while the water levels of Maltu-Oya and Yan Oya are rising.

A large tree that had fallen on a building belonging to Ridigama Maha Vidyalaya had ripped it into two injuring five children of whom one is said to be critical.

Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Pushpakumara Mettage said some areas in Matara are still without electricity.

Nearly 15 people are feared dead while some fishermen who had gone to sea are still reported to be missing. Three bodies of fishermen had been recovered on Saturday alone according to the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman.
