Woman apprehended for attempting to flee to Italy with forged visas

A 39-year-old woman was arrested by the Immigration and Emigration Border Surveillance Unit at the Katunayake International Airport last night for attempting to flee to Italy via Doha, Qatar, using a forged Italian visa.

He was a resident of Mawawil in Chilaw.

She arrived at the Katunayake airport at 8.15 pm yesterday to board a Qatar Airways flight QR-665, which was scheduled to depart for Doha, Qatar.

As she was on her way to the departure terminal to pick up her flight ticket, the officer from the Border Surveillance Unit who had arrested her for suspicious behavior summoned her for questioning.

Those officers who examined her Italian visa discovered that the visa was completely forged and, further questioning the suspect, the officers found that the fake visa had been prepared by a broker in the Wennappuwa area for a sum of Rs. 300,000.

After arresting the suspect, she was handed over to the airport CID officers for further investigations. (T.K.G. Kapila)
