Using whitening cream during pregnancy can harm baby

Colombo, August 6 (Daily Mirror)- Sri Lankan health officials warn of a sharp increase in nervous system and kidney diseases caused by harmful skin whitening creams which seriously damage the skin, Dermatologist Dr. K.D.C. Fernando said.

Addressing the media at the Health Promotion Bureau, he said skin whitening creams have become increasingly popular in Sri Lanka, largely influenced by social pressures and beauty standards that associate fair skin with beauty and success. 

She highlighted that the skin whitening products can have dangerous side effects, as applying various creams, lotions, serums and face washes, especially among young children and parents, may lead to serious health issues.

Dr. Fernando warned the public that many skin whitening creams contain harmful chemicals like Hydroquinone and steroids that can cause serious health problems.

These products can lead to skin irritation, allergic reactions, thinning of the skin, increased sensitivity to sunlight, steroid-related side effects, Acne or breakouts.

Experts warn that using skin whitening creams during pregnancy can be harmful to both the mother and the unborn baby due to the toxic ingredients like mercury, hydroquinone and steroids.

However, due to the use of skin whitening creams can harm the unborn baby by causing brain damage, low birth weight and developmental issues.

Pregnant mothers are strongly advised to avoid unregulated skin whitening products and consult a doctor before using any cosmetic treatments.
