Colombo, April 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Vavuniya, Mullaittivu, Kurunegala and Trincomalee districts after 1.00 p.m.
The department said that temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers, posing additional risks to the public.
Issuing an advisory, authorities urged residents in the affected areas to take adequate precautions to minimize damage and ensure personal safety.
The public has been advised to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees. People are also warned to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies.
In addition, the use of wired telephones and connected electrical appliances should be avoided during lightning activity. The department further cautioned against travelling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant about fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies.
