Colombo, June 8 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have raised concern over a sharp rise in dengue infections across the country, as confirmed cases this year climbed to 35,228, marking an increase of around 30% to 40% compared to the same period last year.
The highest number of cases has been reported from the Western Province, with the Colombo District identified as the worst-affected area, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.
In response to the escalating situation, the Ministry of Health has announced a special nationwide mosquito control programme scheduled for June 8, 9 and 10, covering 74 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across 14 districts.
The campaign will be carried out with the support of the Sri Lanka Police and the Sri Lanka Armed Forces, with special focus on high-risk areas identified as dengue transmission hotspots.
Officials warned that strict enforcement measures will also be taken during the drive, including the issuance of red notices and legal action against individuals found maintaining environments conducive to mosquito breeding.
