While expressing that the curfew and state of emergency were brought in to suppress and intimidate civilians, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today called the government to revoke the suppressive laws and regulations.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference that the members of Parliament should vote in Parliament to defeat proclamation of these oppressive laws.

"I don't think any people's representative can vote to pass laws to suppress the very people who voted to elect them to office," he said.

The MP said these laws and regulations were brought in not for the safety of the ordinary people but to the safety of the rulers. "

Various people including social media activists have been arrested in a move to intimidate them and suppress people's voice against the disruptive actions of the government," he said.

The senior JVP Parliamentarian said the government's approach has not been to alleviate peole's anger, protest and desperation but to aggravate the situation further. (Ajith Siriwardana)
