Luxembourg-backed WEAIR Cargo Airline launched in Sri Lanka

Colombo, June 10 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka’s newest cargo airline, WEAIR, officially commenced operations on June 6, 2026, with the launch ceremony held at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo under the patronage of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism Minister, Vijitha Herath.

The airline has been established with financial and strategic backing from Luxembourg-based IOTC Investment. Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Minister Herath said the investment reflects growing international confidence in Sri Lanka’s economic potential, strategic location and entrepreneurial capabilities despite global uncertainties.

The event was attended by government officials, representatives of WEAIR, foreign investors, stakeholders from the aviation and logistics sectors, and members of the media.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister described WEAIR as a timely and important investment that would strengthen Sri Lanka’s air cargo capacity and enhance regional connectivity. He noted that while Sri Lanka has historically occupied a strategic position in international trade, the country has increasingly relied on external operators for cargo transportation, a situation he said needs to change.

He highlighted that speed, reliability and connectivity are critical to economic success in the modern global marketplace and said the new airline would help strengthen supply chains supporting exports, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals and other industries.

Minister Herath also stressed that success in aviation and commerce depends on discipline, reliability, punctuality and mutual trust rather than statements alone.

WEAIR will begin operations with a Boeing 737-800 freighter aircraft and plans to expand its fleet and capacity in the future. The airline aims to connect Colombo with key destinations across South Asia, Southwest Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean region, the Middle East and Africa.

According to the Minister, the initiative supports the government's broader vision of positioning Colombo as a major logistics hub and a reliable gateway to the Indian Ocean region.

The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for Sri Lankan youth and professionals while facilitating knowledge transfer and technological development within the country. Minister Herath reiterated the government's commitment to creating a secure and investor-friendly environment and promoting partnerships between private enterprises and state institutions to strengthen Sri Lanka’s logistics, aviation and trade sectors.
