Colombo, June 25 (Daily Mirror) - A countrywide Dengue and Chikungunya eradication programme will be conducted across all schools in the country on July 9, aiming to curb the current spread of the diseases.
The initiative, titled Clean Sri Lanka Day, is being organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.
A discussion on the organisational aspects of the programme was held yesterday (24) at the Education Ministry, chaired by Deputy Minister Madura Seneviratne.
The programme will include a range of activities such as cleaning school premises, identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and raising awareness on disease prevention. It also seeks to encourage positive environmental, social, and attitudinal changes among schoolchildren.
The initiative will cover all 10,096 schools in the country, featuring art and poster exhibitions, dramas, cultural and musical performances, and educational lectures with active participation from students and teachers.
Support for the campaign is expected from the Ministry of Health and its affiliated bodies, the Sri Lanka Police, Tri-Forces, Civil Security Department, District and Divisional Secretariats, and Governor’s Offices. Plans are also underway to expand the programme to Teacher Training Colleges and Vocational Training Institutes in the future.
