Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) - Belarus and Sri Lanka have agreed to open a new chapter in their bilateral relations following discussions between Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Speaking to reporters on May 14 after meeting the Belarusian leader, Herath said the official visit marked a significant step forward in strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

He said that a series of “constructive and productive” engagements were held with the Belarusian Head of State, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other government institutions, business representatives, and the tourism sector.

During the visit, both sides signed multiple agreements aimed at expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Among the key outcomes is a plan to establish direct air services between Sri Lanka and Belarus by the end of this year.

Herath said the introduction of direct flights is expected to boost Belarusian tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka while also facilitating greater mobility for Sri Lankan students studying in Belarus. He added that the agreements reached would further strengthen cooperation in education and tourism.

“This visit is very important for our relations. Based on the agreements reached, we plan to take even more active steps to develop cooperation,” he emphasized.

Sri Lanka, widely regarded as a major hub for precious stone production yielding a wide range of minerals including Ceylon sapphires, rubies, alexandrites, and moonstones was also discussed as a potential area for expanded collaboration.

Responding to questions on sectoral cooperation, Herath confirmed that both sides had explored opportunities in the gemstone industry.

“We have plans to supply precious stones that can be further processed in Belarus. In return, we hope to increase imports of mechanical engineering products, agricultural machinery, and fertilizers from Belarus,” he said.

Officials from both countries indicated that the agreements are expected to pave the way for deeper economic engagement and long-term strategic cooperation.
