Colombo, May 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed deep concern over a surge in online content, including social media posts, that it says unfairly targets judicial officers and threatens the integrity of the justice system.

In a statement, the BASL noted that several such posts are being widely circulated and commented upon by members of the public in ways that are harmful to the reputation of the judiciary and the administration of justice.

"The judiciary plays a pivotal role in the dispensation of justice, and it is essential that its independence is safeguarded," the BASL said, emphasising that the law provides specific procedures to scrutinise judicial conduct through proper legal channels, not through public commentary or social media speculation.

The BASL is particularly alarmed by recent online posts that have published images of judicial officers and speculated on ongoing inquiries without any substantiated basis. The BASL says, it has led to widespread public speculation on matters that are sub judice and fall under the jurisdiction of relevant constitutional authorities.

"The presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of our legal system and must be upheld at all times," the statement said.

"Legal professionals and the public alike are urged to refrain from making statements, sharing opinions, or engaging in any conduct that could prejudice inquiries or lead to undue public pressure on the process," the BASL statement added.

The BASL requests for responsible discourse, respect for due process, and the preservation of dignity when commenting on conduct of Judicial officers.

The BASL’s statement, dated May 18, 2025, was signed by its President, Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary, Chathura Galhena.
