1 dead over 250 hospitalized during new year

The Colombo National Hospital said today that 53 patients have been admitted to the National Hospital since 12.00 midnight today as a result of accidents during celebrations last night.

A spokesperson for the hospital said that during the 24 hours ending at 12 midnight today, 233 persons were brought to the hospital with 123 admissions.

The hospital also said that a 46 year old resident of Elvitigala flats was brought dead after he had committed suicide by shooting himself at around 8 PM last night.

The number of victims from alcohol related incidents were nine, 45 road accidents, 40 household accidents and 18 assaults and other personal injuries.

Two individuals were brought in for firecracker related incidents during the 24 hours ending at 12, midnight, the spokesperson said.

There is a 64 % decrease in alcohol related incidents and a 60% decrease in reported cases of personal injuries from last year, the hospital said.(HF)
