Women’s Rights Activist and Attorney-at-law Nimalka Fernando, who spoke about the case of Rizana, a few days prior to her execution stated that Rizana’s life was in the hands of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. She said that all funds to save Rizana have been collected by the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and International Non-governmental Organizations (INGOs) in Sri Lanka but it is the president who can get her out of prison and to bring her back to Sri Lanka safely.
“Though all the funds to save Rizanna have been collected it is only the intervention of President Rajapaksa which can bring her back to Sri Lanka. So her life is in his hands,” Fernando said..jpg)
Speaking further she added that no funds have been allocated in the Sri Lankan budget for the migrant workers who bring the majority of the capital to strengthen the economy of Sri Lanka.
“The budget has not even allocated 5 cents for the migrant workers to safeguard their rights. Instead, from the money migrant workers earn and send back to Sri Lanka and from the money they pay for the Foreign Employment Bureau and from such other payments the state benefits. Today unfortunately exporting labour has become the main economic strategy of the Sri Lankan government,” she said.
It becomes clear that, despite this tragic incident, the Sri Lankan government is yet to formulate a comprehensive plan for seeking the well-being of migrant workers. Will Rizana soon become another statistic, until another young woman falls prey to the rosy promises of life overseas and falls through the cracks to a bottomless abyss of execution?
