Striking together while marching separately

The article of the leader of opposition, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has become an item of discussion among those who are interested in Sri Lankan politics. Many have praised it as an essay that explains many things from a liberal point of view.

On the other hand there were those who blamed him for inaction and inability to launch a mass agitation. I am amused to read these comments.  In the past, the Left parties together with the opposition organised many campaigns against the government. This was done under terrible conditions where people were killed or disappeared, and some others were injured. Organisers faced state terror and thuggery. But the response was poor.

The main reason for this was that the people got  carried away by the Sinhala chauvinist propaganda of the government. Not only the Sinhala village masses but also the urban proletariat was mesmerized by the war efforts of the government. True, they were oblivious to the bloody massacre and the destruction of a civilisation in the north. They did not care for the project of global powers that supported the repression with specific intention of subverting the country and the people.

Hence the truth was trampled under the name of Tamil Tigers. Nobody was interested to know the suffering of the Tamil people that gave rise to the ferocity of the Tigers. All those who indicated the growth of fascist type dictatorship was classified as Tiger supporters and they were shouted down. They believed that a Sinhala paradise of modern day Dutugemunu was emerging with prosperity for all. But these illusions are fading away and suddenly they have woken from their slumbers.
The lame attempt to rob the Employees’ Provident Fund, university teachers’ struggle to save free education, and the struggle of the law fraternity have, to some extent at least, opened the minds of the people.

Now they turn around and ask the Leader of the Opposition where on earth he was. I do not have to defend him just because I am in a working arrangement with him in the Protest of the Opposition. He is not a master of mass agitations and street battles. Nor is he on my side in the class struggle. But the direct issue we face here is not the capitalist exploitation but the rise of a fascist style hegemony of the Sinhala chauvinists. They kill and want to perpetuate killing.

In this scenario without limiting to Sama Samajism one has to look for rationalists, secularists and non-racists. We have to look for leaders who agree at least to the LLRC recommendations. We turn in all directions among the Sinhala political leaders and we see only the smiling face of Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is a liberal committed to work within the global capitalist system. But he is prepared to accept the right of people to rise up against a government that has violated bourgeoisie democracy. This is what he said at the end of the article. “In this instance, President Rajapaksa has imprisoned himself. This would not concern us in the least if it were only the future of the Rajapaksa regime that is in question. Unfortunately, in this instance, all of us in Sri Lanka will have to face the consequences if the Commonwealth and the UNHRC decide to act against us. We will become a pariah state. It is time for President Rajapaksa and his government to think of the country and its people: not only of themselves and their power ride. We have no wish to ride with him in this Lamborghini to disaster.

It is time to engage in serious consultation with the political parties in Sri Lanka and members of the Commonwealth to redress the situation. But words will not do; the government has to show a serious commitment. Firstly, by immediately and fully implementing the LLRC Report. Then President Rajapaksa must make use of the time frame available under the Commomwealth Action Group procedure to come to an agreement with the Opposition political parties on the implementation of the fundamental political values of the Commonwealth in Sri Lanka. If not, the Government must take the blame for the consequences of its violations. In such a situation the rest of us in Sri Lanka will have only one option. Resort to non-violent agitation to force the Government to hold elections both Parliamentary and Presidential. Then the decision regarding the country’s future can be taken by the people.”

We do not believe that this government will go along the liberal formula presented by Ranil. It will use ‘anti-imperialist’ slogans to mislead people and continue with the fascist styled dictatorship. We are left with a struggle based on mass participation to throw out the Mahinda regime. Let us strike together, even though we march separately, to smash the corrupt dictatorship.
