HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) on May 14 welcomed 35 fourth-year undergraduates of the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences of Sri Jayewardenepura University, for attending an orientation session, conducted by HelpAge to create the awareness of its free services provided for needy senior citizens in the country.
While congratulating the undergraduates for becoming future doctors HelpAge, Executive Director Dr. Harsha Bandara encouraged them to recognise the importance of caring for country’s elderly population.
He also explained about the welfare and healthcare services being provided by HelpAge to vulnerable elders in the country.
Dr. Bandara further reminded the students that the country’s older generation had contributed immensely to the nation in the past through their hard work and it even helped to sustain the free education system that benefits students at present.
The Head of Human Resources Mrs. Nelum Ekanayaka explained the objectives of establishing HelpAge Sri Lanka and highlighted the growing needs of the country’s aging population.
She also highlighted that HelpAge carry out its social work with public donations and contributions.
The session gave the students a valuable insight into elder care and inspired them to approach their future medical careers with empathy, gratitude and social responsibility towards senior citizens.
