In line with the call by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to strengthen national energy conservation through public participation, it is both timely and necessary to adopt innovative, practical measures that deliver real results. During discussions at the Presidential Secretariat, His Excellency emphasised the importance of reducing electricity consumption—particularly during the peak hours of 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.— through increased public awareness and responsible usage.
In support of this initiative, I propose that the country should consider starting the day one hour earlier. This simple yet impactful adjustment can help Sri Lanka make better use of natural daylight, reduce energy consumption, and enhance overall productivity.
Key Benefits of an Earlier Start:
1. Reduced Energy Consumption
Maximising daylight hours will significantly decrease reliance on artificial lighting and electrical appliances, leading to lower national energy demand and cost savings.
2. Improved Productivity and Efficiency Research consistently shows that individuals are more alert, focused, and productive during the early hours of the day.
3. Collective National Impact
A coordinated shift in operating hours across institutions—schools, offices, and businesses—will amplify the benefits, creating a unified national effort toward energy conservation.
4. Spiritual Encouragement for Early Mornings
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings.”
5. Economic Relief and Growth
At a time when the economy is under strain, improved energy efficiency and productivity can provide a meaningful boost toward national recovery and sustainability. In these challenging times, bold yet practical steps are essential. By embracing an earlier start to the day, we can conserve energy, strengthen our economy, and move forward as a more disciplined and resilient nation.
