It is premature to review the NPP Government

In reflection on the editorial titled, ‘The NPP Government’s half-time scorecard unimpressive,’ published on May 9, I believe that conducting a performance review of the NPP Government is premature.

Sri Lanka’s current challenges, including severe natural disasters, high public spending, and cybercrime and misappropriation of public funds, must be taken into account.

It’s important to evaluate both the Government and the Opposition in a country struggling economically and recovering from four decades of war.

The ruling parties often prioritise political interests over national welfare, while internal power struggles distract from the country’s pressing issues.

Although local elites focus on elections at various levels for representation, the economic costs of elections during a crisis are significant. The Government is viewed as failing to address the Tamil political question and the unresolved issues of disappeared persons and justice.

Overall, the Government is likely doing all it can within its capabilities. A comprehensive evaluation at the end of its term will clarify its accomplishments and the challenges for the next administration.
