Debt-stricken Lanka, its friends and foes - EDITORIAL

A A A

Our country is in deep trouble. We have defaulted in repaying our international debts. Have run through reserves in the Central Bank and have no internationally acceptable currency to purchases essentials, ranging from food, to fuel, gas and medicines.

Misguided tax cuts left us with no funds for even wage payments. We therefore keep printing money and inflation keeps rising.
Wage cuts and wage freezes have been in place for nearly two years, but prices of all commodities have risen on an average of nearly 60% or more.

According to UNICEF, malnutrition stares our children in the face. Our national leaders have called for a ‘down grade’ to our economic status to that of ‘Least Developed Category’ from ‘Middle Income Category’ and as if to rub salt on the wound, Lanka has been ranked among the lowest South Asian countries in the Global Hunger Index. To overcome the crisis, our political leaders applied to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a debt restructuring facility and have finalized a staff-level agreement.

To extricate the country from this mess, our leaders are relying on the resources of the US and Western Europe, via exchange earnings through export of our  main cash crops tea, rubber, coconut, apparels, the earnings of expatriate workers (which brings in by far the largest percentage of foreign earnings) and tourism.

Today, the government is expending major efforts to expand our market-share of exports to Western Europe and the US. Our tourist industry is also involved in a drive to attract tourists from these countries. Yet, these countries too are in the grip of inflation, running short funds to back their stumbling economies as well as stocks of fuel.
France appears to be more resilient than its neighbours, in August 2022, the country’s inflation rate (measured by the consumer price index) was 5.8%, compared with 7.9% in Germany and 9.1% in Italy.

Reuters reported on October 12, Britain looked set to go into recession as data showed its economy unexpectedly shrank in August, while the National Grid Chief Executive Yesterday (October 10) reported that Britons have been told to prepare for 3-4 hour rolling blackouts this winter. Further ahead, Britain’s economy looks set to slow sharply as surging inflation hits households and forces the Bank of England to raise interest rates quickly, even as activity stagnates.

Forbes Advisor’ points out the US entered recession in the summer of 2022 ‘with two consecutive quarters of negative Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. It added ‘...inflation was still sky-high and wrecking the purchasing power of everyday Americans’.
The question thus arises as to whether people of Western Europe and the US will have the resources to purchase our export products or be in a position to take advantage of the packages our tourism industry is extending to them.

Again, our political leaders have not grasped the fact, that neither Western Europe nor the US have been particularly friendly toward Lanka. The EU and the US refuse to criticize Israeli application of apartheid against Palestinians. Yet, they accuse Lanka of war crimes for eliminating terrorism in our own country.
It is time for Lankan leaders to recognize friend from foe. The Arab and Islamic states have always stood by Lanka defending her against western interference in domestic affairs.

These countries provide the biggest job markets for our expatriate workers. Yet we do not even have a single friendship association with these countries nor have we established vibrant business councils with them.
Egypt for instance was the first African-Arab country to establish diplomatic relations with our country way back in 1957. In the 1980s, Sri Lanka provided 60% of Egypt’s tea requirements. Today, the quantity of Lankan tea exported to Egypt is negligible. Sadly no big effort is made to regain our position as market leader in his country, according to Egyptian Ambassador Maged Mosleh.

The Middle East is awash with oil and gas, which keeps the economy of the world ticking. The economies of these countries have not been hit by inflation and are stable. Sadly, little efforts are being directed to tap this huge potential market in West Asia (Middle East) in our favour.

Let us also not forget, these countries have staunchly supported us at the United Nations Human Rights Councils and other fora. Western nations however, continue to interfere in our domestic problems.
It’s time to change track. It’s time to recognize friend from foe and direct our attempts to search for markets to states who have continuously supported us through thick and thin and have the resources to do this.

How is it Israel is an Apartheid state ? Arab Christians Israelis have a disproportionately higher tertiary education qualification compared to the Jews. Christians work in well paid jobs. Druze and Christians voluntarily participate in the Israeli Army. The black Jews were rescued from starving failed Ethiopia and integrated into Jewish society .The Muslim Arabs Israeli citizens have a better standard of living than neighboring Arab countries. Eritrean muslims trek all the to Israel seeking asylum. Rich Arab and Muslim countries don’t want to even open their doors to Afghan, Syrian, Iraqi, Lebanese, Iranian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi refugees and economic migrants whereas Germany has taken over a million Syrians and predominantly those crossing the English Channel illegally to get into the real paradise England are Muslims who traverse Muslim countries to get into England that bequeathed us a paradise built in her image that our Buddhist foremost and racial policies destroyed.

Punchi No less a person than Dr. Uri Davis, a Jew and a dual citizen of Israel and UK has called Israel an Apartheid state. He has written two books, viz. ISRAEL AN APARTHEID STATE in 1987 and APARTHEID ISRAEL: POSSIBILITIES FOR THE STRUGGLE FROM WITHIN in 2003. Further, many International Human Rights Organisations worldwide, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International among others consider Israel an Apartheid state. Importantly, Prominent Israeli Organisations like B'tselem and Yesh Din consider Israel as an Apartheid state.

These here so-called friends of Sri Lanka are exclusively dictatorships or authocratic regimes. In all these countries, human rights are being trampled on. In Middle Eastern countries, especially Sri Lankan labor migrants suffer from human rights violations. That such countries do not vote against Sri Lanka on violations of human rights is only for selfish reasons. We are now in the 21st century and in this time, human rights violations are no longer an internal problem of the country which behaves cruelly towards its people. In this respect it is justified that other countries demand and will soon enforce that the war crimes in Sri Lanka are dealt with and that international human rights are respected. And who is helping Sri Lanka in this difficult situation? Certainly not the "friends".

Punchi, Poland is requiring Germany to pay billions of dollars for crimes committed by the Germans during WW2. Sri Lanka and others should ask UK for billions of dollars compensation for the war crimes committed by them during the colonial times. Where were the human rights? Unfortunately we still have people like Punchi with slave mentality.

Socrates The Editorial is NOT about Human Rights but about our SEVERE Economic problems and the Failure of the Authorities to identify the countries that have the Resources to help us and seek their help. The Editor has identified the Gulf Arab countries as having the Resources and as our friends and opines the Authorities have FAILED to secure their Assistance in this DARK Hour of ours. Hasn't the Editor hit the Nail on the Head?

Socrates The Editorial is NOT about Human Rights but about the Severe Economic Problems Faced by the country and the FAILURE of the Authorities to identify the countries that have the Resources to Help us in these Hard Times and obtain their Help. The Editor has correctly identified these countries as the Gulf Arab countries which have the Resources, and no doubt, have helped us in the Past and opines that the Authorities should turn to these countries for Help in this Dark Hour of ours. Surely, there is NOTHING Wrong in this.

Its a responsible and impartial Editorial on the economic impasse facing SL. Its not only SL in this plight but its universal due to the ongoing major geopolitical realignments. Its true that western economies are the ones bursting at the seams after induging in rampant consumerism and fiat dollar printing. Staggering from one impasse to the next by hyper inflation and declining economy. Trying desperately to float their economy by exporting their inflation to other countries. The main cause of all this, the US Petro dollar dominance of the oil market is near. OPEC with 80% crude oil reserve is awash with wealth. Bloomberg. Soaring Dollar Leaves Food Piled Up in Ports as World Hunger Grows. Food importers from Africa to Asia are scrambling for dollars to pay their bills as a surge in the US currency drives prices even higher for countries already facing a historic global food crisis. SL has to act prudently on the best interests of her citizens.

Hi All, Apartheid in Israel is happening in Israeli occupied Palestinian Territories not Israel proper. Maybe the ISIS type Apartheid where the slaving and extermination of Yazidis and other non Muslims is preferable to some people. 1000 abductions and conversion ‘’a form of Apartheid’ of Hindu girls a year takes place in one province Sindh in Pakistan. Modern Sri Lanka, like modern India are Portuguese, Dutch and finally British creations. In Sri Lanka they took three or more seperate kingdoms and unified them as one country. Since Independence we have inflicted suffering on our minorities, we have not paid any compensation even for the houses we burnt down. If fact JR brought in a law that Tamil owned houses that the owners cannot repair was forfeited to the state. Yes there was famine in British ruled Bengal but also the Turks allowed 40% of Maronite Christians in Lebanon to be killed in a genocide. Muslim rulers of India forcibly converted people to Islam - convert or die.

Jewish and Islamists are two sides of the same coin. The "Peaceful religion" followers are racists from the Middle East to Bangladesh that includes Sri Lanka. The poor Palestinians are being harassed, slapped and degraded in their daily work commuting to Israel from the occupied Palestine. Islamists are no better. They harass "Infidels" where ever and whenever they have upper hand. Dead ISIS, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kattan-Kudystan in the Batticaloa, Bangladesh, Kashmiris are few examples of what these people inflict on the Non-believers. These are not our friends but the WEST!

Punchi, Who is in Occupation of the Occupied Territories? Is it not the zionist entity, Israel? Doesn't it make Israel an Apartheid state? The rest of your comments totally Irrelevant to the Editorial and merits no reply.

Esther Cohen, European Jew Friday, 21 October 2022 11:23 AM

When will you all stop calling ALL Jews zionists? I am not an Israelian but a Jew and like most Jews living outside Israel condemn the illegal occupation of Palestine. How would you feel if ALL Sri Lankans living abroad will be held responsible for the killing of thousands of tamil civilians during your civil war? Come off your high horse by the way.

    Lokka Friday, 21 October 2022 05:42 PM

Esther Cohen, Please note that I used the words zionist entity to emphasise the nature of the Israeli entity. Does that amount to calling all Jews zionists? Not at all. I KNOW that there are many Jews, even inside Israel, who are VERY MUCH opposed to the zionist OCCUPATION of Palestine and the atrocities committed by the HEARTLESS OCCUPIERS against the Palestinians for OVER 74 years with NO END in Sight.

Esther Cohen, European Jew Friday, 21 October 2022 10:22 PM

Refer to the Israelian government instead of "the Jews". Like you refer to the government of Iran instead of "the Muslims". This Israelian government only feeds antisemitism in the world.
