The Pharmaceutical Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL) held its premier annual event—the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Sessions 2025—on 29th June at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla. The event brought together national and international pharmacy leaders, professionals, academics, researchers, and students for a vibrant exchange of ideas to advance pharmacy practice in Sri Lanka.
Under the leadership of Mr. Priyantha Sahabandu, PSSL President, and the PSSL Council, the event marked a key milestone in promoting excellence, innovation, and collaboration in the pharmaceutical field.
AGM: Leadership and Strategic Direction
The AGM, chaired by Mr. Sahabandu, began at 9:00 a.m. with Society members discussing past achievements and future goals. A major highlight was the reappointment of Mr. Sahabandu as President for a second term, ensuring continuity and progress in strategic initiatives.
Scientific Sessions 2025: Driving Global Dialogue and Innovation
The Scientific Sessions followed, offering a full-day academic and professional programme with active participation from global and local stakeholders.
Global Collaboration
The event welcomed representatives from: Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA), Japan Pharmaceutical Association, Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (FAPA), Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage.
These partnerships highlighted PSSL’s efforts to align local practices with global standards and strengthen international ties.
Session Highlights
Technical Session I: Young Researchers and Global Collaboration
Ms. Annagrace Malamsha, CPA President, opened the session with a message on global partnerships in pharmacy education and public health. A plenary panel including Mr. Raymond Anderson, Ms. Tara van der Vliet, and Ms. Bridget Kebirungi of CPA discussed antimicrobial stewardship, workforce development, and reforms across Commonwealth nations.
The “Young Researcher Spotlight” followed, showcasing research from students of all seven Sri Lankan universities offering BPharm degrees through oral and poster presentations.
Technical Session II: Leadership, Policy, and Global Vision
In the afternoon, Mr. Sahabandu welcomed Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Mass Media (Chief Guest), and Mr. Andalib Elias, High Commissioner of Bangladesh (Guest of Honour). He emphasised PSSL’s commitment to excellence in pharmacy education and practice.
Associate Prof. Victoria Rutter, CPA CEO, delivered the keynote on leadership, interprofessional collaboration, and the role of national pharmacy bodies in health systems reform.

PSSL–CASPPER MoU: Strengthening Partnerships
A significant highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between PSSL and CASPPER (Collaboration of Australians and Sri Lankans for Pharmacy Practice, Education and Research), aimed at joint efforts in research, education, and advocacy, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Looking Ahead: FAPA Congress 2026 and Beyond
The event also featured a promotional session for FAPA Congress 2026 in Thailand, encouraging continued regional networking and collaboration.
Awards and Fellowship
An award ceremony honoured student researchers and professionals for their outstanding contributions. Dr. Dilmini Udugampola, PSSL General Secretary, delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants, partners, and organisers.
The event concluded with refreshments and a fellowship dinner, fostering networking in a collegial setting.
Conclusion
The 2025 AGM and Scientific Sessions were a celebration of scientific excellence, leadership, and international partnership. PSSL continues to lead Sri Lanka’s pharmacy sector with vision and purpose, driving innovation, shaping policy, and strengthening global connections.
