The Health Ministry has introduced a new list of approved food and beverage items that can be sold in school canteens as part of the programme to promote healthy eating among schoolchildren.
According to the guidelines, the following meals are allowed:
Dhal rice, Corn Milk Rice (Bada Iringu Kiribath), Sweet milk rice (Pol kiri pongal), Vegetable pittu, Pumpkin Pol Roti, Kos koththu, Egg roti mixed with vegetables, Masala dosa, Idli, Fish sandwich, Vegetable sandwich, Pancakes, Pumpkin soup, Vegetable salad, Chickpea salad, Fresh fruit and Fruit salad
The Ministry said the guidelines are intended to improve the nutritional quality of food available in schools and encourage healthier eating habits among students. The approved food list forms part of the broader Healthy Sri Lanka programme aimed at creating a healthier school environment.
