Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman said that it  is ironic that the government, led by the NPP (National People’s  Power), had been compelled to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the  ground-mounted solar power project in Sampur in the Eastern Province  along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi since it was opposed to  the project tooth and nail when in the opposition.

Mr. Rahman told a press conference that the NPP, as a party in the opposition in 2016, even went to court against the project.

“It is a twist of irony that the JVP has been compelled to  undertake the same project when it is the ruling party today,” he said.

“President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed during the  third reading debate of the budget that investors and tourists are keen  to visit Sri Lanka today. However, they demonstrated against investments  when in the opposition years ago, driving the investors and tourists  away. However, we don’t stage protests today. Tourists and investors  visit Sri Lanka today as we act as a responsible opposition,” he added.

The MP alleged that there is a couple who are NPP MPs though  it is claimed that the present government does not encourage nepotism.

Also, he alleged that a diplomatic post had been given to an NPPer who  was defeated at the General Election 2024 while the tender for the  construction of Wind Power plant to one of NPP’s close associates.
