Gnanasara Thera granted bail after nearly one and a half months in incarceration

• The Thera was sentenced to nine months of simple imprisonment

Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Ven. Galaboda Atte Gnanasara Thera, who was incarcerated for nearly one and a half months, was granted bail by the Colombo High Court.  

On January 9, 2025, Gnanasara Thera was sentenced to nine months of simple imprisonment by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court for delivering a hate speech that hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community in the country.   

In addition to the prison term, Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500.   

The Colombo High Court issued this order following a revision application filed on behalf of Gnanasara Thera.
