Wild boars, monkeys and hedgehogs (porcupines) have been removed from the National list of Animal Protection Act so far, Agriculture and Wildlife Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Addressing a meeting held at Hambantota, the minister said that elephants, wild boars, hedgehogs, monkeys and peacocks have been categorised as creatures that are causing harm to crops and agrarian activities.

A committee was appointed to look into this and is still being discussed subsequent to the removal of the animal species from the list.

However, wild boars, monkeys and hedgehogs are the animal species which have been removed from the animal protection act, and the power to control those animals will be given to the agriculture committee. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

    Lion Saturday, 27 August 2022 11:03 AM

I think victor Ivan is behind this move as he has been writing extensively to allow the killing of these animals as millions of rupees are lost annually due to the crop damage done by these wild animals.

Our vegetable plots are ruined by these animals... I have 3 acres of vegetable land in NuwaraEliya district, its abandoned now. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY GIVING US POWER TO CONTROL THESE ANIMALS ???

    Mm Saturday, 27 August 2022 11:46 AM

Mr Amaraweera, stupid move!!! Now they’d be killed left right and center by humans who encroach their lands!! these animals were slaughtered for meat even with the act in place now can imagine what to expect when it’s no more!!! the protected elephant and leopard are not safe under the useless act either!

    Sunil Saturday, 27 August 2022 12:41 PM

Wild boar will now become a delicacy.

naki maina Saturday, 27 August 2022 01:21 PM

    N Andhasena Saturday, 27 August 2022 01:24 PM

What about the animals in parliament? They have done so much damage to the country and get away with it

More bad publicity for lanka going to happen Saturday, 27 August 2022 02:40 PM

Hope none of these creatures are actually engendered in Sri Lanka. A lot of wrong doing happens for convenience of businesses, including farming businesses. Better to approach world funds for animal protection for compensation about animal destroying agriculture and sustain things as is. Trying to eradicate the many native animals from affecting farms will only end the end result in more reputation harm to our country.

You must be a one dimensional thinker.

    Mahesh Saturday, 27 August 2022 04:39 PM

A very good move that should have done many years ago. Also peacock should be removed from protection. If anyone feels sad, then they can take monkeys and other animals home and look after them as pets.

    Johnson Saturday, 27 August 2022 09:47 PM

That's a really dumb reaction. So you don't think we have any responsibility to the natural world and to our fellow animals? All of it is just a resource to be used and any creature that gets in the way deserves to die? Also, look up false choice (you are an uneducated peasant so I don't blame you for not knowing): Eradicate or take them home as pets? Not farm smarter? Really?

Some of the comments here is proof Sri Lanka will take another 100 years to get anywhere.... The "free" education has been wasted on many.

    TMA Sunday, 28 August 2022 12:24 AM

Absolutely ignorant comment. Made out of the sheer ignorance of science.

    Sameeta Sunday, 28 August 2022 02:12 AM

Now haraka’s like Mahesh can enjoy Sri Lankan home grown food, like the rest of the 6.9 million harak that caused the food and economic crisis. At the expense of innocent animals. Only man is vile in SL

Ravi Perera Sunday, 28 August 2022 04:23 AM

This is 19th century thinking , and certainly not in any way aligned with supposed buddhist beliefs. Eliminating other animal species because we think the are eating OUR GRASS or other plants is pretty pathetic , sad , and shows a lack of education. That the proposal came from a Sri Lankan politician is however entirely predictable.

These animals are fulfilling their 'basic needs' only, we 'humans' have so many 'greedy wants' which can be fulfilled at the cost of the 'nature economy' as well as other animals.

Kapila Fernando Saturday, 27 August 2022 05:10 PM

Good.So now the starving people are allowed to hunt for wild bores and monkeys.

    D R WILLIAM Saturday, 27 August 2022 07:23 PM

Very good move. Monkeys destroy all the crops and fruits. Farmers must be provided with light guns to shoot at monkeys.

    Sambo Saturday, 27 August 2022 08:50 PM

    How about the politicians.
