Presenting a report on SriLanka, acting High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Nashif told the Human Rights Council that the situation here was fragile and called for accountability.

The report says Sri Lanka’s new Government should embark on a national dialogue to advance human rights and reconciliation.

It called for accountability and deeper institutional reforms to prevent a recurrence of past violations.

The report says Sri Lanka is at critical juncture in its political life, and is in the midst of a serious economic crisis which has severely impacted the human rights of all communities and people of all walks of life.

This has spurred broad-based demands by Sri Lankans from all communities for deeper reforms and accountability, and gives the Government a fresh opportunity to steer the country on a new path. For sustainable improvements to take place, however, it is vital to recognise and address the underlying factors which have contributed to the economic crisis, including embedded impunity for past and present human rights violations, economic crimes and endemic corruption.

“Fundamental changes will be required to address the current challenges and to avoid repetition of the human rights violations of the past,” says the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The report calls on the Government to immediately end the reliance on draconian security laws and crackdowns on peaceful protest, reverse the drift towards militarisation and show renewed commitment to, and deliver on, security sector reform and ending impunity.

While the security forces recently showed considerable restraint in response to mass protests, the Government has since taken a harder line approach, arresting some student leaders under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and violently suppressing peaceful protests.

A heavily militarised environment and culture of surveillance also continues in the north and east of the country. (Kelum Bandara)

This is great news for people who cherish democracy and freedom of speech. Now we can see how deep Sri Lanka has sunk in a septic tank under the Mahinda Ranil regime.

Sri Lanka will ask for time again thus kicking the ball down the lane over and over. Give excuses, excuses and go on. Time to sort out the ethnic problem. Home grown solutions utter bunkum. Ask for foreign help I mean foreign intelligent advise. We don’t have intelligent genes .

Only assurance. Monday, 12 September 2022 11:30 PM

The rulers of this country bankrupt and no one is taking up the responsibility. Similarly after UNHRC Session is over they don't carry out the assurances given at the Session. At the next session they come with a different assurances. It goes on like this in the past so many years.

The report portrays the reality in the country, but we have the Foreign and Justice Ministers painting a totally different picture. The world can see how the people's rights are violated with arrests when they voice their displeasure about the economy and the corrupt political system. What we need is for the Human Rights Council to make sure, for the sake of the people of the country, to stop agreeing to the "domestic mechanism" proposal. All along this has been their game plan to appease and safeguard those corrupt politicians and the ruling party supporters.

UNHRC should have The authority and the mechanism to haul political leaders including the Rajapaksa siblings and Ranil to The Hague for international criminal courts!! Until these culprits of human rights abusers prosecuted at the Hague the human rights violations will continue!!

Human right violations have doubled since Ranil Wicramasinghe became the president. It is a military rule in Sri Lanka and no democracy.

“Fundamental changes will be required to address the current challenges and to avoid repetition of the human rights violations of the past,” says UNHCR. This can only achieved by going for an immediate election and seek a fresh mandate from the people. BUT the existing MP's at present jump any which way to further their survival and rob the country (especially the SLPP) in doing so they will put to shame wild monkeys jumping from branch to branch from tree tops.

Sri Lanka is a powder keg waiting to explode. It has a naive President at the end of a few strings who is oblivious to the impending catastrophe. His full time activity is scouring the earth for even more loans. Generating wealth through enterprises, investment and building confidence is a distant dream.

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 13 September 2022 09:08 AM

Sri Lanka has never been accountable for any atrocity committed, in fact they commit more with total arrogance and impunity because the IC is poor in taking action against cowboy countries and governance such as this. It is time the world woke up on this.

    Aram Tuesday, 13 September 2022 09:38 AM

Yes they are continuing their preplanned colonization in the purely tamils areas whichever govt. On power. This will eventually cause serious repercussions like rights to self determination. Or referendum

    Democrat Tuesday, 13 September 2022 09:52 AM

What is this government, has been elected according to democratic norms, not at all. International institutes UNHRC and other lending organizations should insist this un democratic government to dissolve the parliament and go for a fresh general election.

Leaving other things aside, bribery or corruption will never end in Sri Lanka as it is a gene in the blood of politicians and blood can not be changed. Only you HR can do is to recover stolen wealth stashed or invested in several countries, if not, you keep on doing same things for tens of years what you are doing now against Sri Lanka with no results.

No to UNHRC Monday, 19 September 2022 08:20 PM

We must employ any means possible to end the UN/UNHCR. They are hell bent on changing our culture. While what happened in 2022 is unforgivable, the UN HCR drum beating about previous year matters shows they are stuck in the past.
