In 1965 Prime Minister Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s SLFP Govt lost the General Election and UNP led byDudley Senanayake won the election. The Governor General was William Gopallawa. Mrs Bandaranayake did no vacate office but stayed on for 48 hours trying to get the support of others to form her once again. A large boisterous crowd gathered around Temple Trees and shouting for Madam to stay in Power. Mr William Gopallawa summoned Mrs Bandaranaike and advised her to resign. The crowd around Temple Trees became very boisterous. It was left for Police ASP Mr. V.T Dickman and a police to baton charge, teargas and disperse the crowd. That was the caliber of Police officers who served the dept during that period. The following day Mr. Dudley Senanayake assumed duties as Prime Minister.
