Education Ministry is expected to annul the concept of National Schools, which generates many issues, and instead the concept of leading schools, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

He also stated that he had to make the difficult decision of not admitting children from grades 1 to 13 to any grade-regulatory school without Grade 5 scholarship.

While addressing an event organised on Teachers' Day at the Ministry, he said admitting children to any grade-regulatory school from 1 to 13 without the grade 5 scholarship will be unfair to the students who score were higher in the scholarship examination.

He also said if the number of students in a class exceeds 60, and even the teacher cannot be in the class, an accommodation issue would be created in classrooms where teachers would be unable to perform their teaching duties. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Now the parents will get upset. Because they are so proud to call some odd school a 'national school ' and expect their children who pass exams from 'national school' to get the best jobs etc. Some have even contributed and made name boards which even Oxford may not have. Why kill the passion?

There will be new situation when English medium happens. However, the current system is appalling, so any way to prod and break it, away from the fanatic mad parents wishes is best. It is probable that most of those parents voted for Gota, and Rajapaksa/es so those parents are fairly brainless and don't know what's best anyway.

Do we need any formal education? Look at Chichi, he got a PhD with a grade 5 education.

These are matters where all parties must agree and make directions that must stay for at least for 15-20 years before they are revised depending on the needs. The Ministers change and they make changes to the systems. This must not happen

Ponna education system in SL to produce Kalakanni politicians!!

Please Mr. S.P., I am sure you mean well. However, your tenure as a Minister can be very short lived. In these circumstances is it prudent to make these changes. If you can at least ensure that all concerned coming under your purview do their jobs diligently you will be able to make a major contribution to the education system in the country.

Change of ministers make unnecessary changes to the already messed education system

How can child be admitted to grade 1 to National or Leading school if they already had to pass grade 5 scholarship exam. Really doesn't matter actually, getting English medium from Grade 1 will change things considerably for children in rural areas. Simply blocking for English medium at the old-time National schools/Leading schools is a way to move away from the current madness. Of course the National School parents will be most desperate to get their child into English medium wherever because overall for Sinhala and Tamil speaking household that gives far better chance for their child's future.

These people do not know the modern concept of education ..the label doesn't matter you call it with national schools or central schools or grammar school or with any name but what matter is substance..How to do we teach ? What do we teach ? What modern teaching methods are adopted? How we do develop our children skills and knowledge...this is what matters not the name and label ? With name change does not happen till we change our education pedagogy and new methods .Go and do this in our university too ..most of Arts faculties are copy cutting notes for generation since 1960s till now and go and change that before you change the name of school..I do not know who gave this man the post of education ? He does not have any knowledge about our school and university ? This country has so many educated people to be an education minister... consider the quality of Kanankara; the first education minister in Sri Lanka people are still remember him for his service but now education minister??

Leading school concept is deep rooted in the society. When I meet someone new who is a Sri Lankan origin, the first question, 'Which school you attended?" .Based on the answer, the judgement starts.

    Sunil Sunday, 09 October 2022 08:57 AM

By whatever name you call these schools, one thing is certain. Education in Sri Lanka is doomed.

    Observer Sunday, 09 October 2022 11:42 AM

Everytime a new Minister takes over the Education Portfolio, he wants to hit the Headline News.No progress in the standard of education, however ?

Gon Miniha Sunday, 09 October 2022 06:40 PM

National schools makes national fools, and leading schools then leading fools... which we have plenty of already. Maybe where you live the Sri Lankans talking about which school someone went to are actually more stupid than the many millions who voted for Gota here.

Zarook Cassim Sunday, 09 October 2022 09:08 PM

Mr. Minister, we are not as foolish as the 225 thinks. We have seen you and your elk, the great Bandula and Akila talking through their hats. Changing the names in no way changes the pathetic quality. You call shit by any other it will stink the same. Do something productive or be silent.
