Colombo, July 2 (Daily Mirror) - Efforts to prevent schoolchildren from being drawn into drug use have intensified, with officials reporting that 225 awareness programmes have already been carried out for teachers and students across schools, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
They said the update was shared during a recent discussion where attention was drawn to ongoing national initiatives aimed at strengthening drug prevention among young people.
In addition to school-level activities, discussions with university leaders have resulted in the formation of student peer groups. These groups are expected to play a key role in supporting awareness campaigns and spreading preventive messages among the student community.
Officials said that the combined approach, targeting both schools and higher education institutions, is intended to build a stronger, youth-led awareness network to address the growing concerns over drug use.
Authorities further highlighted the importance of continued coordination between education institutions and relevant agencies to ensure sustained prevention efforts at all levels of the education system.
