West Indies beat Sri Lanka in first Test

June.29 (Mirror Sports) - The West Indies produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs in the first Test of the two-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday.

The hosts wrapped up the victory just 30 minutes after lunch on the fourth day, dismissing Sri Lanka for 101 in their second innings after the visitors resumed their reply trailing by 318 runs.

Veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach starred with the ball, claiming 4 for 51 and reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets. The 37-year-old became only the fifth West Indian to achieve the landmark after clean bowling Asitha Fernando, leaving his side one wicket away from victory.

Roach, who returned to the Test side following an injury crisis after his international career appeared to be over a year ago, described the achievement as a special moment.

"It's been a long journey. It took a lot to be here, with plenty of support, especially from physiotherapist Dennis Byam, who worked tirelessly to help me return from injury," Roach said after the match.

Asked whether the second Test could be his farewell appearance, Roach remained non-committal.

"Check me in the morning. Right now, we just want to celebrate this win, and then discussions will be had," he added.

Young paceman Jayden Seales sealed the emphatic victory by dismissing last man Lahiru Kumara to finish with figures of 3 for 14.

Former Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was the only batter to show significant resistance, top-scoring with 43 before edging Roach to first slip shortly after lunch.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva admitted his side fell well short despite believing they had posted a competitive first-innings total.

"We thought we had enough runs on the board in the first innings. Losing one of our key bowlers, Lahiru Kumara, was a major setback. If we're to bounce back in the second Test, we'll need a bowling attack capable of taking 20 wickets," he said.

For West Indies captain Roston Chase, the victory marked his first Test win since taking charge a year ago.

"It's like a dream come true to see our plans executed so well throughout this match," Chase said.

The result was the West Indies' second-largest innings victory in Test history, surpassed only by their innings-and-219-run win over Bangladesh at the same venue in 2018.

It also ended a long wait for success in the format, giving the Caribbean side their first Test victory since defeating Pakistan in Multan 17 months ago and their first home Test win since overcoming Bangladesh in Kingston in November 2024.

The second and final Test of the series will begin on Friday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
