June.29 (Mirror Sports) - Canada have reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time after a stoppage-time winner secured a 1–0 victory over South Africa.
The World Cup “points table” and old narratives are no longer needed, as Canada continue their remarkable rise on home soil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a tense and tightly contested knockout clash in Los Angeles, chances were limited for both sides, with the match heading towards extra time until Stephen Eustaquio produced a moment of brilliance. The Canadian midfielder struck a precise low drive from outside the box in the second minute of added time, sparking wild celebrations among home supporters.

The result seals Canada’s place in the World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history, capping a breakthrough tournament under head coach Jesse Marsch. Earlier in the competition, Canada announced themselves with a stunning 6–0 win over Qatar, their first-ever victory at a World Cup finals.
South Africa struggled to break down a disciplined Canadian defence and managed just one shot on target throughout the match. Despite flashes of pressure, they failed to create clear-cut chances in the final third.
Canada came close earlier through a cleared goal-line header and also appealed for a penalty after a challenge inside the box, but the referee waved play on, a decision that sparked frustration on the bench.
The introduction of Alphonso Davies added late attacking momentum as Canada pushed for a winner, eventually rewarded for their persistence in stoppage time.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on 4 July in the Round of 16.
