Colombo, June 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Traffic Branch at the Yatiyantota Police Station, who was arrested in connection with the disappearance of his service firearm, has been remanded in custody. The suspect was arrested yesterday (June 27) by officers from the Seethawakapura Division Crimes Investigation Bureau following an investigation into the missing weapon.
According to police sources, the OIC had officially drawn a pistol and 10 rounds of live ammunition for operational duties on June 26. However, records indicate that he failed to return the firearm and ammunition upon the conclusion of his duties, triggering an immediate inquiry.
Following his arrest, the suspect was produced before the Ruwanwella Magistrate's Court today (June 28). After considering the facts presented in court, the Magistrate ordered the police officer to be remanded in custody until June 30.
Meanwhile, a special operations team under the direct supervision of the Seethawakapura Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), alongside the Seethawakapura Division Crimes Investigation Unit, is conducting further investigation into the incident.
