The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday warned that there is a risk of rapid COVID-19 spread in the country due to the highly contagious Omicron variant.
Executive Committee member of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Dr. Prasad Kolambage said the number of COVID positive cases reported daily could increase within the next two weeks due to public gatherings over the long weekend.
The GMOA said the infection has increased drastically around the world due to the Omicron variant, especially in the US, UK and Canada, and there is an increase in infections in Sri Lanka as well, the GMOA said.
Therefore, the government and the people are advised to remain vigilant during these days as people are back to their day-to-day business after the festival holidays, he said. There is a possibility of a spike in the number of infections due to the highly contagious Omicron variant.
Therefore, the GMOA has advised the parents and teachers to encourage children to be vaccinated.
