India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has emphasised that Sri Lanka’s stability is crucial for India’s own security and prosperity.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Jaishankar made these remarks during a meeting with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in New Delhi yesterday.
The Indian Minister reaffirmed India’s continued support for Sri Lanka in maintaining political and economic stability.
During the discussion, Premadasa underscored Sri Lanka’s commitment to pursuing a non-aligned foreign policy based on fostering open and balanced relationships with all partners, while safeguarding the nation’s independence.
He also briefed Minister Jaishankar on the progress of Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring efforts and highlighted the potential challenges the country may face regarding debt repayments in 2028 and the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
Both leaders also discussed several areas of mutual interest, including renewable energy initiatives and infrastructure development projects in Sri Lanka.
