High Court rejects Shashi Weerawansa’s appeal, affirms sentence

Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne dismissed an appeal filed by Shashi Weerawansa challenging the two year prison sentence and fine imposed on her for possessing an irregularly obtained passport.

Delivering the judgment, the judge affirmed the conviction and sentence previously imposed by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, holding that there were no grounds to interfere with the lower court’s decision.

Shashi Weerawansa had been convicted by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court in 2022 on charges relating to the possession of an unlawfully obtained foreign passport. The court sentenced her to two years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000.

Seeking to be acquitted of the conviction and sentence, Weerawansa subsequently filed an appeal before the Colombo High Court. However, the High Court today rejected the appeal and upheld the original judgment in its entirety.
