A Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) aviation unit deployed under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) successfully carried out an emergency casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) mission in Am Dafok on June 30, rescuing 14 injured personnel and civilians, the Air Force said.
The mission was launched after troops from the Zambian Battalion came under attack by an unidentified armed group while conducting an area domination patrol in Am Dafok. The assault, involving assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and machine guns, left several Zambian soldiers, civilians and other security personnel injured. Following adverse weather that prevented another aviation unit from responding, the UN Force Commander tasked the SLAF Sri Aviation Unit with the mission.
Despite the volatile security situation, the Mi-17 helicopter successfully landed in Am Dafok, evacuated all casualties and transported them to medical facilities in Birao and Bria for treatment.
The Air Force said the onboard Aeromedical Evacuation Team provided continuous medical care throughout the operation, ensuring the safe evacuation of all 14 casualties.
