Parliament went into chaos yesterday after Sri Lanka Muslim Congress MP Nizam Kariyapper, posted a statement on X quoting the Secretary to Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne saying that the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday attacks has been identified. MP Kariyapper said in the post that Secretary Ravi Seneviratne had revealed to the Committee on High Posts that the main conspirator behind the Easter Sunday attacks had been identified.
“Before the High Posts Committee, in response to my question, Ravi Seneviratne stated, “We have identified the main conspirator behind the Easter Sunday attacks,” the MP said.
Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara urged the government to come up with details on the disclosure saying that he was also there in the High Posts Committee when Ravi Seneviratne made the disclosure.
MP Kavinda Jayawardena also urged the government to reveal the mastermind as he has been intervening in the matter as a Catholic MP. Jayawardena said he had seen the report on the Daily Mirror and demanded for answers from the government, only to be told by the Deputy Speaker that the Justice Minister had given a response.
When questioned, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said information with regard to the investigations into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks could not be disclosed as investigations were still ongoing.
He told Parliament that even Parliament must not order to disclose this information because they are part of the investigations.
The Minister said those who attempt to disrupt the investigations in indirect ways should not be allowed to do so.
Minister Nanayakkara said Seneviratne came up with the disclosure when he was questioned about it at the Committee on High Posts meeting and that he had not disclosed it to the media.
Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe said MP Kariyapper should be removed from the Committee on High Posts for his irresponsible act.
“There are matters that can be disclosed or kept confidential. A member who belongs to an important parliamentary committee should be aware as what to publish and what facts that has to be kept confidential. Accordingly, MP Kariyapper should be expelled from the Committee on High Posts,” Samarasinghe said.
