Probe launched against police officers over video recording Weligama shooting suspect’s arrest

The Special Investigation Unit has launched an investigation against the police officers who were involved in video recording the suspect who was arrested over the Weligama Chairman’s shooting, Police Spokesman F. U. Wootler said. 

He told a news conference that the close attention of the Inspector General of Police has been drawn to the matter and said that the incident cannot be approved as it is harmful to the victim and the future judicial procedures.   

He said the investigation will find out whether the video recording was done by a third party or with the consent of the police officers.   

Various people including legal experts raised concerns over the incident of the police in sharing videos of suspects on mainstream and social media following their arrests, warning that such actions could undermine ongoing investigations and future prosecutions.
