CID seeks legal advice on self-proclaimed ‘Bodhisattva’

The CID, which is conducting investigations against the self-proclaimed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Mahinda Kodithuwakku for allegedly insulting Buddhism and offending religious feelings, informed the court yesterday that they have sought the Attorney General’s advice regarding future legal action against the suspect.  

The CID told the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that they have requested the Attorney General’s advice on whether the case against the suspect can be maintained.  

The defence counsel, appearing on behalf of the suspect, informed Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura that the case cannot proceed if the suspect is suffering from a mental illness. The counsel further stated that there are medical reports to support the claim that the suspect is mentally ill.  

The suspect, Mahinda Kodithuwakku, was arrested on January 15, 2024, by the CID for allegedly insulting Buddhism and offending religious feelings. He is currently out on bail. The matter was fixed for June 18.
