This situation is a direct consequence of poor leadership in steering the once-grand United National Party (UNP) towards electoral success. The party's leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has proven to be a profound disappointment—a fact he remains unwilling to acknowledge. In an attempt to undermine Sajith Premadasa’s growing influence within the party, Wickremesinghe brought in Ravi Karunanayake, a move that disastrously backfired. Faced with persistent obstruction and lack of recognition, Sajith Premadasa was left with no viable option but to part ways. In the aftermath, a significant number of senior UNP members defected to the then-ruling government. Rather than course-correct, Wickremesinghe attempted to pacify the remaining loyalists with the hollow assurance that those who had abandoned the party would eventually return. That promised day, however, never came. The fact remains 'Ranil is a serial loser'.
