As Sri Lankan students studying overseas are struggling to find their tuition fees amid the on-going forex crisis in the country, the government seeks multi-party consensus in setting up private universities in the country.

The Minister of Transport and Highways and Minister of Mass Media, Bandula Gunawardena noted that over 300,000 students have left the county to continue their higher studies at foreign institutions with an estimated cost of US$ 2 billion per annum.

Due to the prevailing foreign exchange crisis in the country, many of these students who are already overseas are struggling to pay for their tuition fees and meet other expenses.

Hence, the Minister noted that the government plans to set up foreign universities inside the country with the agreement of other political parties.

This doesn’t solve the issue. Students are going abroad not just because they do not have enough study opportunities here. But they don’t have enough skilled job opportunities and any hope of economic prosperity in Sri Lanka.

    saman Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:16 AM

The reason for so called study overseas concept is to one day settle down in a county where pastures are much (much) greener compared to Sri Lanka. Setting up foreign universities inside the country would not serve that purpose unfortunately. On top of that, you have the JVP mob to deal with!

    Mohanan Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:33 AM

The government should note that many students going for studies in UK, USA and Australia intend to convert to PR later on live in those countries. Setting up private universities won't bring them back. However, those who study in India, Russia and China do come back, so the govt. should target those. It is not the right thing to consider at this point of time as it will lead to protests by IUSF and further unrest.

    Jude Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:33 AM

Government university students will beatup private university students!!

    Lokka Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:40 AM

Why should you get agreement from 'other ' political parties. They will cry foul that the government is privatizing the education. And other destructive forces like the Inter University Students Federation will organize protests to sabotage any attempt to open private universities. GMOA will also join the bandwagon. Hence there is no need to get their permission to do the right thing.

    Mahila Thursday, 18 August 2022 01:19 AM

When the Majority is a bunch of retards, nothing will happen to better the situation??!! Nonsense protests will be pastime?? The only way I see is that such that, those future private university and PRESENT Government universities admissions are made MERIT based admissions without any form of manipulated standardisation!! They (all) should charge a fee – cost of undergraduate education (UE) – by a ‘Government undergraduate Loan Scheme’ (GULS) total cost of UE programme! This loan enjoys a grace period, until the recipient gets employed post-graduation, when 20% of his Gross monthly earnings – before Taxation – would become Loan repayment (interest free)!?

Set up foreign uni. near airports and far away from state uni.

    maha Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:50 AM

Setting up private Uni is good for long term solution. But the authority should give immediate solution to current students, who face sever hardship receiving parent's money.

nihal Jinadasa Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:54 AM

It's too late even now ......pls speed up the process .............just ignore the JVP connected Unions

    sam Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:56 AM

Should have been done many years ago. Govt closed even what was there like SAITM. Dont see a political issue except the almighty GMOA.

    Dan Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:57 AM

Wonderful news. Hopefully we will be able to arrest the flight of young people and the future skills / brain drain. Hopefully they well study here and stay here and contribute to the local economy. The alternative inevitable is that they use our foreign exchange, work and study overseas, and stay on a reside overseas.

Very good decision This will not only save forex, but can earn forex too

    tilak Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:51 AM

Do it like Malaysia has done, JV with international Universities. But JVP/Perotugama/Aragalaya guys used to free education will obstruct it like they did with SAITM and long years back with NCM

    gamini Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:52 AM

It is outdated mentality to call fee charging universities as "selling education" Oxford and Cambridge are fee charging Universities

    Roshanaly Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:58 AM

For God sake don't start the Private Medical College. At the start the GMOA will be silent and at the time graduation they will start their game. Poor students, after paying heavy fees, they will be on the street.

    Pereira Wednesday, 17 August 2022 10:04 AM

Excellent. Foreign exchange can be saved too. JVP as usual, will cry foul

    Chris Wednesday, 17 August 2022 10:06 AM

Why do you need multi party consensus? It should not be a political decision but rather a part of the national policy on education

Be Fair Wednesday, 17 August 2022 10:30 AM

Very very late in the day. We would have mad MOnash here already if not for Corruption

Morris pan Wednesday, 17 August 2022 10:52 AM

Very good move all course fee should be in USD weather ari Lankan students or foreign student and the study program should limits to four years with two final exams thereafter out of the campuses

    sas Wednesday, 17 August 2022 11:11 AM

before go for agreement with other party, get agreement with GMOA. and SLMC

    Gunadasa Wednesday, 17 August 2022 11:12 AM

JVP will protest to stop starting new private universities in Sri Lanka but they will wholeheartedly accept those who have returned after studying abroad

    Aram Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:11 PM

But the lunatic GMOA and other selfish organisations who maintains a mafia medical business will not allow a reasonable needs which benefits the country. We need a leader who is strong and crush these educated mafia organization

    Karu Wednesday, 17 August 2022 01:42 PM

We have missed the bus in many routes. The British gave us a high standard cultured education. We were far ahead in the region. Private Universities are a need but it's too late. Going abroad for higher studies have lot of other benefits.

    Dee Wednesday, 17 August 2022 02:30 PM

Students go abroad not because of the absence of private unis but several reasons. Their parents like to say the children are studying 'abroad' They want to somehow jump after dragging the course for years. Somehow get hooked up and marry and get PR.

    Ram Wednesday, 17 August 2022 02:45 PM

Thanks to GMOA opportunities were lost in the past. Now that the GMOA has fresh blood hope we will have a few foreign Universities including the field of Medicine

    Man Wednesday, 17 August 2022 02:55 PM

No private universities required as foreign degrees offered and they have to migrate, serving no purpose. Need to develop state universities where the real talent is while expanding the opportunities for scholarships in Russia, China, India, etc.

    sam Wednesday, 17 August 2022 07:22 PM

No one is opposed to this where so much forex can be saved. Permission required from GMOA

Go home Bundula Wednesday, 17 August 2022 08:36 PM

Who will want to go to a private university in Sri Lanka? Who outside of the private system will be worse off once private university start up? Bandula is the fool who prevented for English medium schools for primary students. That man has no brains, he think being in Gama, like Gama man has value for getting job overseas. Maybe for housemaid or driver, but otherwise degree or diploma giving institution of education matters. Private lanka university may not be recognised for international work, if worse, all fail students allow to go there, and amazingly get top marks. What a scam. Maybe Bandula should to to a full English spoken university to better understand reality of education qualifications.

    Mo77 Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:17 PM

Most of private universities are in Sri Lanka do not have physical facilities and human capital. They operate at a single rented building with part time lecturers and no practice or experimental facilities. I do not think any foreign investors come to invest here now. Sri Lanka had grate opertunities and it was missed out due to some political parties. If Investors comes, he wants to establish universities with most demanding facilities including medicine, engineering, law and accounting. Policy decisions of this country are taken by small political parties, GMOA and government university student unions

    Afzal Wednesday, 17 August 2022 10:36 PM

Set up a university that alkso offers MBBS degrees. Make it a JV with foreign universities. Start targetting the students who o abroad spending foreign exchange. Instaed, get them to pay in gforeign currency. All expat workers will automatically send their monies to SL. Also target foreign students - maLDIvians, nigerians etc. Learn from India, Malaysia, Australia for whom university income is a forex earner .

    Mahila Thursday, 18 August 2022 01:34 AM

The way forward should be future private university and PRESENT Government universities admissions are made MERIT based admissions without any form of manipulated STANDARDISATION!! They (all) should charge a fee – cost of undergraduate education (UE) – by a ‘Government undergraduate Loan Scheme’ (GULS) total cost of UE programme! Then, will succeed to have best students potential University intake (Qualitatively) and as graduates, government only “Advances the funds” until recipients get employment, which also indirectly makes government and universities (Private and Public) to ensure study programmes attuned/matched to industry needs!! Not some ‘Hotch Potch’ That’s, ‘Fair Deal All-round??!!

Anne Karunaratne Thursday, 18 August 2022 08:58 AM

Government universities should not be allowed to interfere with Private universities!!

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 18 August 2022 12:37 PM

JVP will not agree to uplift standards of eduction. Contractor Stalin will join them to protest.
