Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - A series of environmental conservation programmes aimed at protecting Sri Lanka’s coastal ecosystem will be held today (11) along the Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia coastline to mark World Environment Day.
The initiatives, organised by the Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management Department under the Environment Ministry, will focus on ensuring the sustainability and safety of the country's coastal areas.
A key event of the programme will be the official naming of public beach access routes in Dehiwala under the patronage of the Environment Minister and the Deputy Minister.
According to the Ministry, the initiative is intended to accurately identify and map public access routes to the coastline, helping to safeguard public access to beaches while preventing illegal encroachments and obstructions.
Officials said the move will also protect the rights of local residents and both local and foreign tourists to access the coastline without hindrance.
The naming and mapping process is also expected to improve emergency response capabilities by enabling rescue teams to quickly locate and reach specific coastal areas during natural disasters or other emergencies.
