SEF holds annual awards and felicitation ceremony

The Serendib Education Foundation (SEF) had its annual awards and felicitation ceremony recently at the MICH Hall Colombo 6. The event was attended by dignitaries, donors, scholarship award winners and key members of the SEF.

The SEF was established in 1991 and is 25 years. The event commenced with the interviews of potential scholarship recipients from many parts of the island. These students had excelled at the GCE O Levels and A Levels but due to poverty and financial issues they were unable to proceed with further studies. However, the SEF stepped in to give these deserving students much-needed financial support through a scholarship programme which would cover their entire higher education. This laudable venture by the SEF gives around 150 scholarships annually, each scholarship averaging around Rs.90,000 per student.

The main event was held with speeches from Dr. Uvais Ahamad, Fouzul Hameed, SEF President Mohammad Suhaib and others. Most speakers stressed on the importance of education and the necessity to proactively assist under privileged students with the necessary funding. Ahamed quoting Nelson Mandela’s famous quote “Education is a powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” further requested potential donors to actively assist the SEF with donations and endowments which will help the organisation increase its scholarships to students.
