The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) recently held its annual award ceremony to honour the entrepreneurs in the industrial sector of Sri Lanka for their achievements in the fields for manufacturing and service industries.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including the Bangladesh High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Tarik Ahsan, chief guest former Deputy Minister of Highways and Investments promotions Eran Wickramaratne, Emanuel Salinas, a representative from the World Bank and many other personalities.

The primary objective of the Achievers of Industrial Excellence Award is to promote industrial growth in the country by recognizing those entrepreneurs who have excelled in manufacturing or services. The evaluation was made on the number of criteria encompassing turnover, value addition, productivity and responsibilities towards employees, growth and future, research and development, quality assurance, environmental responsibilities, health
and safety and social responsibility.

In his remarks, Wickramaratne mentioned that it is commendable to recognize achievers in the industrial sector.

“I am glad that it covers every aspect from micro to extra-large industries. We are now at a new beginning and we are going to start afresh with a new Parliament and a new government. It is going to be a new step and it is giving us an opportunity to welcome new dimensions in our local industries. We now need to think differently to bring about changes in the economy. We have our local industries such as tea, rubber, coconut, apparels and IT. Most of these industries haven’t pushed their boundaries to identify new opportunities. The former government kept labour in and sent goods out, but this time we are going to keep labour in and send goods out. SMES contribute to only 4% of the total exports. Therefore we need new products and it is a must to develop every small industry to a medium and eventually large industry in order to make an impact on our economy and make it stronger.”

Out of the many awards presented that night, the crystal award for the Extra-large category for the Manufacturing sector at the National Level was awarded to Maliban Biscuit Manufactories (Pvt) Ltd while the bronze award for the service sector in the Extra-Large category provincial level was awarded to D. Samson Industries (Pvt) Ltd.
