Sri Lanka’s reforms signal opportunity for US investors: Julie Chung

The new government’s dedication towards a corruption-free public procurement has sent strong positive signals to foreign investors, said US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung.
She was optimistic that Sri Lanka would be able to attract a fair chunk of US investors, who are looking to relocate their operations from other foreign locations, as many investors are looking at South Asia. The possible tariffs on countries such China and Mexico have intensified with the new Trump administration assuming office this week.
She made these remarks during a meeting held this week with Industry and Enterprise Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti, at the Industry and Enterprise Development Ministry.
Handunnetti invited the US investors to invest in Sri Lanka’s mineral sand, granite and other key sectors.
He assured that the government would take measures to bring down the production costs and to address the tax-related issues faced by the industries.
Chung also congratulated the National People’s Party on its strong mandate and also congratulated Handunnetti on his appointment as the Industry Minister. (NF)
