SLFFA calls for urgent action as Colombo Port congestion worsens

The Sri Lanka Logistics & Freight Forwarders Association (SLFFA) has voiced concerns regarding the ongoing congestion at the Colombo Port, pointing out that the pressing issue has persisted for several weeks and is critically affecting the nation’s logistics industry and the import/export trade.

This in turn is leading to a negative perception not only in the region but also across the international supply chain. In light of the significant economic challenges the nation is currently facing, the SLFFA asserted that it is crucial to unite as stakeholders, government authorities, industry representatives, and service providers to tackle this situation collaboratively and without further delay. Highlighting the need for process improvement and digitalisation, the SLFFA said it has been actively engaged in discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Ministry of Highways, Ports & Aviation. It has submitted comprehensive proposals both individually and in partnership with other trade bodies.

“As we navigate this crisis, it is clear that our current operational processes require improvement. Embracing digitalisation, implementing a coordinated “single window” system, and leveraging technology are crucial steps needed to enhance our operational efficiencies,” it said.

The SLFFA called for the logistics industry to transition into a more streamlined and responsive framework. It noted that by adopting digital solutions and process improvements, it can reduce delays, improve transparency, and facilitate faster and more efficient movement of goods.

“These changes are essential not only to alleviate current congestion but also to prepare our port and logistics systems for future challenges,” it said.  Meanwhile, it also shared that it is particularly concerned about the accusation levied against its member organisation Expolanka Freight, bringing discredit despite it taking the local brand global.  “We strongly urge the authorities to carry out an impartial and expeditious investigation into the allegations levelled, which will ensure the public of its right to factual and correct information,” it said by noting that it is essential that to enable technology to address these concerns to prevent future such occurrences.  As the apex industry body, SLFFA went on to urge all stakeholders to come together with a shared vision and determination to find practical and swift solutions to overcome this crisis. The efficiencies in the logistics system affect all sectors of the supply chain and have far-reaching implications for the nation’s economic growth, it said.  “While we appreciate the commitment shown by the President and the Ministry of Highways, Ports & Aviation, we reiterate our call for an all-hands-on-deck approach. By harnessing the power of process improvements, digitalisation, and technology, we can enhance our operational capabilities and restore our standing in the eyes of the international trading community,” it said.
