Resplendent Ceylon resorts earn Michelin Key honours

Sri Lankan luxury hotel operator Resplendent Ceylon yesterday shared that all three of its properties have received Michelin Key distinctions, a new global benchmark for hospitality excellence, positioning the island nation on the world’s luxury travel map.

Resplendent Ceylon is part of the Dilmah Tea family’s hospitality arm.

Ceylon Tea Trails, a collection of colonial-era tea planters’ bungalows in the central highlands, was awarded three Michelin Keys, the highest recognition. Wild Coast Tented Lodge in Yala National Park earned two Keys, while the cliff-top Cape Weligama resort on the southern coast received one Key, the company said in a statement.

Introduced in 2024, Michelin Key is the hotel industry’s equivalent of Michelin Star for restaurants, recognising properties that deliver exceptional guest experiences based on design, service and authenticity.

According to Michelin, one Key represents ‘a very special stay’, two Keys signify ‘an exceptional stay’ and three Keys denote ‘an extraordinary stay’.

Each distinction is awarded by anonymous Michelin Inspectors, who stay as regular guests and assess every detail against five universal criteria: (1) a strong sense of place acting as a true gateway to the destination, (2) architecture and design that reflect quality and harmony, (3) service, comfort and maintenance of the highest standards, (4) value for money at the right level of excellence (5) and uniqueness and character expressed through authenticity and individuality.

“This recognition is a testament to our passionate teams across Tea Trails, Wild Coast and Cape Weligama, who create unforgettable, deeply authentic journeys for our guests,” Resplendent Ceylon said in a social media post.

The awards come amid efforts by Sri Lanka’s tourism industry to reposition itself in the luxury travel segment, following a sharp downturn caused by the 2022 economic crisis. Tourism, a key foreign exchange earner, has shown signs of recovery, with steady increase in arrivals.

Ceylon Tea Trails: 3 MICHELIN Keys – The only resort in Sri Lanka to receive the highest accolade.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge: 2 MICHELIN Keys

Cape Weligama: 1 MICHELIN Key
