Maithri Wickremesinghe appointed to Central Bank governing board



President’s Counsel Maithri Evan Wickremesinghe, has been appointed to the Governing Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) with effect from 2 October 2025, the monetary authority announced on Friday.

The appointment was made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake under the provisions of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act No. 16 of 2023. Wickremesinghe succeeds Rajeev Amarasuriya, who relinquished duties as a member of the Governing Board on 27 June 2025.

The Governing Board, established under the 2023 Act, is tasked with overseeing the administration and management of the Central Bank and setting its general policies. Members of the board also serve on the Monetary Policy Board, which is responsible for formulating the country’s monetary policy.

Wickremesinghe, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and holder of an Honours Degree in Law from the University of Colombo, is a practicing lawyer appearing in appellate courts and in both national and international arbitrations.

He chairs the University Services Appeals Board and serves on the Governing Council of HelpAge Sri Lanka, while also being a trustee of Ayati Trust Sri Lanka. Wickremesinghe is an Independent Non-Executive Director of Convenience Foods Lanka PLC, where he chairs its Governance and Nominations Committee and Remuneration Committee.

He has previously held senior directorships in listed companies, including a commercial bank and a conglomerate, and has chaired several audit and nominations committees. Wickremesinghe has also been a visiting lecturer at leading universities and an examiner at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.
