Leading the charge in sustainable shipping, M.V. Ane Maersk, the world’s first large methanol-enabled container vessel, completed its first port call at the Port of Colombo, on February 24, marking a significant milestone in maritime history.
Named in honour of Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, Chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and A.P. Moller Holding, this vessel signifies a transformative shift towards sustainable practices in the shipping industry.
M.V. Ane Maersk embodies a new chapter in environmentally-conscious transportation. Its innovative design emphasises fuel efficiency, establishing a model for low-emission solutions across the field.
Setting a precedent for sustainable shipping globally, M.V. Ane Maersk is the first of Maersk’s 18 large methanol-enabled vessels and the world’s second methanol-enabled container vessel.
The vessel entered service on February 9, on the AE7 string, connecting Asia and Europe. The port calls include Shanghai, Tanjung Pelepas, Colombo and Hamburg, with Ningbo, China being its first destination.
The container vessel, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, has a nominal capacity of 16,000 containers (TEU) and is equipped with a dual-fuel engine, enabling operations on methanol as well as biodiesel and conventional bunker fuel.
