DFCC Bank at 70: Investing in people for a purpose-driven future

As DFCC Bank marks its 70th anniversary in 2025, the institution reflects on a legacy rooted in nation-building through human potential.

Established in 1955, the bank has evolved into a centre of leadership, inclusion and innovation, with its people at the core of progress.

In 2024, DFCC Bank delivered over 100,000 hours of structured training spanning digital, technical, behavioural and leadership areas. This effort is part of a broader shift towards agility and sustainable growth, driven by the DFCC Learning Academy, launched the same year. The academy now includes modules on sustainability, customer centricity and leader-ship, using AI and machine learning to personalise learning at scale.

To commemorate its anniversary, the bank introduced the PACCE value framework—Passion, Authenticity, Courage, Collaboration and Excellence. These values are embedded in hiring, leadership development, recognition and service delivery. In 2024 alone, 371 internal pro-motions were recorded, while leadership readiness is now strengthened through individual coaching and robust succession planning.

Of 807 new hires in 2024, 75 percent were under 30. Women accounted for 48.5 percent of new recruits, 46 percent of the total workforce and 42.5 percent of promotions. DFCC Bank also maintains a 94 percent return-to-work rate after maternity leave.

To foster open dialogue, the ‘Listening Wall’ allows staff to directly raise ideas or concerns with the leadership, supplemented by forums like ‘Open Day’ and ‘Breakfast with the CEO’.

The Universal Banker Model, introduced in 2024, has enhanced branch agility by training staff to serve across multiple functions.

Over 1,300 employees were trained on ESG frameworks and green finance in 2024, with expanded participation in 2025.

“Looking ahead, DFCC’s Human Capital Roadmap for 2025 focuses on building a future-ready workforce, innovation-led leadership and a performance and values-based culture,” said DFCC Bank Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Paduma Subasinghe.
